Walter Gast holds a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Baylor University and a Master of Journalism degree from the University of North Texas. He is a certified secondary school teacher in the State of Texas. He currently teaches Journalism and Desktop Publishing and advises the scholastic newspaper and yearbook programs at J.J. Pearce High School in the Richardson Independent School District.

Walter is an elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, where he is an Adult Sunday School teacher. Walter has also been a member in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (where he was baptized and confirmed), the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. It was as a member of an ELS church, at age 18, that Walter became interested in Christian symbolism when he was asked to create seasonal banners for the church's temporary worship space. When a permanent sanctuary was completed, Walter was asked to design seasonal paraments for the altar and pulpit.

Walter and his wife, Karen, live in Dallas with their two cats, Natasha and T-Max.
