The winged man is a symbol of St. Matthew because he began his gospel with a genealogy of Jesus. The figure of the winged man is taken from the vision of Ezekiel of four "living creatures". (See also Eagle.) Shown holding a sword and scales, the figure is instead a symbol of the Archangel Michael. |

The apothecary's mortar and pestle are used as the emblem of two saints who were physicians: Cosmas and Damian. They are also used sometimes as the emblem of St. Luke. |
